Born out of heartbreak, and a failed attempt to settle in the United States for a couple of months, in an effort to make things work with the other person involved, the outcome somehow led to an abrupt and unexpected return to Berlin, my place of residence at the time, less than 24 hours after my departure.

Having sublet the room that was then my home, the implications of this were that I had nowhere to return to during the period I had planned to spend away, nor access to my belongings.

After overcoming the initial shock, my refusal to remain still and in a state of resignation led me to make the decision to embark on a journey of around 40 days - travelling across Italy, reconnecting with my family there, in the south; in Puglia; and closing the circle in the place where everything had begun, and where I had last seen that person: Naples.

What began as a project about grief, and the assimilation of it as a shadow, without answers or resolution, continues to evolve to this day, as an ongoing work in both exhibition and photo-book form; as a visual and written narrative; through travel notes, subsequent reflections and revisitation; exploring the process of grieving, letting go, reintegration; reconnecting with one's own roots once again, nourished by one's own ashes, by the desire to be reborn, and to get back in the game.
